Helen Varnedoe, a 69-year resident of Ojai, died Tuesday in Ventura. She was 91.
She was born Helen Moore in Carrollton, Ga., and taught school in Cullman, Ala., where she met her husband, Harry, who preceded her in death.
The couple moved to Ojai in 1927, establishing a home and citrus ranch on Fairview Road.
Varnedoe was the librarian at Nordoff High School before returning to school herself, receiving her teaching credential from UC Santa Barbara. She taught for 25 years in Ojai elementary schools before retiring in 1970.
She remained active in the League of Women Voters, Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Honor Society, the American Assn. of University Women and Ojai Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Harry and Eleanor Varnedoe of Danville; daughters and sons-in-law Anne and Edmund Tomczak of Palo Alto and Alice and Loye Pounds of Cupertino; brothers Joe W. Moore of Ventura and Ralph Moore of Medford, Ore.; sisters Martha Fraker) of Bakersfield, Cecile Harris of Birmingham, Ala., Virginia Smith of Gadsden, Ala.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Ojai Presbyterian Church.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Assn.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home.
