BURUNDI : Grenade Wounds 49 Rwandan Refugees

Forty-nine Rwandan refugees were wounded, five seriously, when a grenade was tossed into a refugee camp in northeastern Burundi, aid workers said. “This could be an attempt to terrorize the refugees to make them cross the border back into Rwanda,” said Hitoshi Mise, head of the U.N. refugee agency in Burundi. Thousands of Rwandan refugees of the Hutu ethnic group fled to Burundi fearing revenge attacks for the genocidal killings in Rwanda in 1994 that left about 500,000 members of the Tutsi minority and Hutu moderates dead. The refugees have been given until July 1 to return home or face forcible relocation to camps in the interior of Burundi.
