Switch to Metric Is Long Overdue

Re “Conversion to Metric System Inching Along,” May 21:
Orange County is on its way to join the metric system. Starting next year, several projects will initiate this new change. Some people argue that this conversion is unnecessary and will only create confusion. Still others believe “the metric system is easier to use.” The federal government hopes that the transformation from the traditional English system to the universal metric system will be completed by the year 2000.
The United States had stubbornly clung to the old English system for years. It’s about time that drastic changes take place in the measuring system. The English system requires specific sets of conversion that are easy to forget. Now with the United States joining the rest of the world, it will make international trade a lot easier. The movement to the metric system should be expanded throughout the country.
