Local Man Is a Page at GOP Convention

A 20-year-old Oxnard resident who attends the University of Southern California will witness Republican Party politics in action next week working as a page at the Republican National Convention in San Diego.
Timur Taluy, a third-year electrical engineering student, is one of 11 pages from California to be selected for convention duty. He left Friday and will work through the conclusion of the convention Aug. 16.
Pages’ duties range from helping convention delegates find their way around the San Diego Convention Center to passing out printed material.
The opportunity to work closely with national leaders is a once in a lifetime experience, said Taluy, a 1994 graduate of Oxnard High School. “It’s good to learn about the key issues and how they’re going to affect the people,” Taluy said.
Taluy said he registered as a Republican soon after his 18th birthday, not because he was enamored of a particular Republican figure but because the party cared about the things that are important to him. This is not Taluy’s first involvement in politics. In March he won a seat as student senator at USC, and was appointed student affairs director by the student senate.
Also, he is working on a fund to enhance leadership opportunities for students at USC. “I wish more young people would become proactive in the governing bodies of their schools and governments,” Taluy said. “Our ideas, ideals, and most importantly our futures are at stake.”
Taluy said he is looking forward to experiencing firsthand what the party has planned for the November election and beyond. And if he rubs elbows with some of the party’s stars, all the better.
“Hey, it’ll be nice to meet Bob Dole in person,” he said.
