Smith Receives a Contract Extension

Missouri Coach Larry Smith signed a two-year contract extension, keeping him at the university until 2001. Smith, in the third year of a five-year contract after coaching at USC, is 6-16-1 since joining Missouri in 1993. . . . Miami Coach Butch Davis said that he anticipates that two starters--running back Danyell Ferguson and receiver Yatil Green--under investigation for possible NCAA violations will be able to play in Saturday’s opener at Memphis. . . . Senior running back June Henley tied a school record for touchdowns, rushing for 187 yards and three touchdowns in No. 25 Kansas’ 35-10 romp over Ball State in a season opener at Lawrence, Kan. Henley’s 28 touchdowns tie the record Tony Sands set in 1988-91. . . . At Winston-Salem, N.C., Bill Hollows tied a career high with four field goals as Wake Forest broke an eight-game home losing streak with a a 19-13 victory over Appalachian State.
