Calabasas Rehires Spadaro as Girls’ Basketball Coach

Steve Spadaro, Calabasas High girls’ basketball coach the past three seasons, has been rehired after resigning in March.

Spadaro stepped down after Principal Bob Sutton said Spadaro could no longer disembark from the team bus as it passed near his Thousand Oaks home after road games.

Spadaro said he will ride the bus back to school after games.

Cross Country

Scott Marshall, dean of boys at Alemany High, has been named coach of the boys’ and girls’ programs.

Marshall replaces Dimitri Lagos and Vicky Waggenbach, who were fired in June.

The track coaching positions have not been filled.

The Nordhoff High girls’ cross-country team is ranked sixth in The Harrier magazine’s national preseason poll.

The Rangers, defending state Division III champions, were ranked fifth in the magazine’s final 1995 poll.

Saratoga Springs (N.Y.), the defending mythical national champion, is ranked first, followed by Orem Mountain Springs (Utah), Yucaipa, Caledonia (Mich.) and Clifton Centreville (Va.).

Soccer

Sophomore defenders Nicki Zarr and Breanne Levery have transferred to Chaminade High, Eagles Coach Mike Evans said. Zarr attended Thousand Oaks last year and Levery attended Louisville, where she was a second-team All-Mission League honoree.

Football

Michael McCord, a linebacker who played at Crespi High and Pierce College, has joined the squad at Cal State Northridge, Coach Dave Baldwin said.

McCord, 6-2 and 235 pounds, was a walk-on at Utah, but left the school last week, according to Baldwin.

Miscellany

Cara Blumfield, an all-league softball shortstop and basketball guard at Calabasas last year as a freshman, has transferred to El Camino Real.
