Cal State Fullerton Gets Help, Ties Virginia

Sheldon Thomas scored the first goal for Cal State Fullerton and the Titans were helped by an own goal by Sam Franklin to tie top-ranked Virginia, 2-2, in the Coca-Cola Classic men’s soccer tournament Saturday at Charlottesville, Va.
Franklin, trying to clear a corner kick by Alessio Smith in the first half, accidentally headed it into the net to make it 2-2.
Ben Olsen and Brian West each scored in the first half for the Cavaliers in a game that originally was scheduled for Friday but postponed because of weather conditions related to Hurricane Fran.
Mike Forensich had five saves for the 17th-ranked Titans, who are 2-0-1 and will face American at 9 a.m. today.
Virginia is 1-0-1.
In the UC Santa Barbara women’s volleyball tournament:
49ers win two--Misty May, formerly of Newport Harbor, had seven kills, nine digs, 24 assists, three aces and five blocks for Long Beach State in a 15-6, 15-0, 15-4 victory over Fresno State. The 49ers (6-0) also beat Pittsburgh, 15-3, 15-4, 15-8.
In nonconference women’s volleyball:
CS Fullerton d. Georgia State, 15-8, 15-9, 15-6--Heather Bassett had 14 kills and Melissa Blackler had 18 assists for the Titans (5-0).
At the Jammin’ Invitational cross-country meet:
Arizona dominates--The Arizona men finished 32 points ahead of O2 Debt, the club team that finished second, and the women finished 68 points ahead of second-place UC Irvine at Carbon Canyon Regional Park.
Former Titan Mike Tansley of O2 Debt won the men’s individual race covering the eight-kilometer course in 24 minutes 29 seconds, and Arizona’s Amy Skieresa won the 5K women’s race in 16:57.
