‘Bulletproof’ Is Tough at the Box Office

The crime comedy “Bulletproof,” starring Damon Wayans and Adam Sandler, made its debut as the weekend’s top-grossing film with an estimated $6 million in ticket sales.

“Tin Cup” was second with $4.8 million, followed by “First Kid” with $4.3 million and “A Time to Kill” with $3.9 million, industry sources said Sunday.

“The Spitfire Grill” was fifth with $3.6 million, while “Independence Day” took in $2.9 million for sixth to top the $285-million mark in its 10th week of release.

The new film “Bogus,” starring Gerard Depardieu as a boy’s imaginary friend come to life, earned about $1.9 million for 11th place. It opened on 1,134 screens, about half the number of “Bulletproof.”

Three films were running tight for the seventh through ninth positions, with an estimated $2.8 million. They are “Jack,” “The Crow: City of Angels” and “The Island of Dr. Moreau.”

In 10th place was “A Very Brady Sequel,” with about $2.3 million.

Final weekend tallies will be released today.
