CAMARILLO — Three people were killed and two sent to the hospital Saturday night in a single-car accident on the city’s east side, authorities said.
The names of the victims were not released pending notification of next of kin, a Ventura County Sheriff’s Department spokesman said.
Alcohol has not been ruled out as a factor in the accident, Sheriff’s Sgt. Chuck Buttell said.
Authorities said the accident occurred about 7:25 p.m. on Mission Oaks Boulevard at Hillcrest Drive. A late-model Honda struck a light pole with such force that the car was split into two pieces, and the front end came to rest 150 feet up the road from the rear end, Buttell said.
Ventura County Fire Department personnel freed the driver and a passenger from the front end of the car, and both were transported to St. John’s Pleasant Valley Hospital for treatment.
“Three passengers in the back seat were pronounced dead at the scene,” Buttell said.
A power outage earlier in the afternoon in Camarillo does not seem to be related, Buttell said.
