FULLERTON — An alert Fullerton police motorcycle officer was credited Saturday with preventing a fire from overtaking a local restaurant near Cal State Fullerton.
Cruising by on routine patrol, Officer Matt Malone spotted smoke coming from the roof of Texas Loosey’s Chili Parlor and Saloon at 2:30 p.m. and notified the police and fire departments, said Lt. Tony Hernandez of the Fullerton Police Department.
“He noticed it looked like more than routine hamburger smoke,” Hernandez said of the incident.
The restaurant management and customers were unaware that the rooftop air-conditioning had caught fire, Hernandez said.
The Fire Department arrived at the restaurant, at 2720 E. Nutwood Ave. and quickly put out the flames. The restaurant and adjoining businesses were evacuated and no one was hurt. There was only minor damage.
“Had he not been there, there was a good chance there would have been extensive damage,” Hernandez said.
