OXNARD — They were runaways, both Courtney Palmore and the game.
Palmore broke loose for an 81-yard return on the opening kickoff, and the Oxnard High football team went on from there to defeat Buena, 38-6, in a Channel League opener Friday night at Oxnard High.
The opportunistic Yellowjackets (3-0-1, 1-0 in league play) scored three times following Buena turnovers and tallied 38 unanswered points. They appear en route to their second consecutive shutout before Aaron Kleefisch scored the Bulldogs’ lone touchdown on an 11-yard run in the final minute.
“This gave us a good jump,” said Oxnard tailback Desmond Davis, who rushed 15 times for 91 yards and scored twice.
Like Davis, Ross Randolph scored twice for Oxnard, once on offense and once on defense.
His 80-yard touchdown reception on a short pass from Bryan Spencer (5 for 11, 122 yards and two touchdowns) gave Oxnard a 12-0 lead in the second quarter. Randolph intercepted Jeff Taladay’s pass on the first play of the third quarter and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown and a 31-0 Yellowjackets’ advantage.
For Buena (1-3, 0-1), Taladay completed 14 of 30 pass attempts for 149 yards.
