Broten Is Waived by the Devils

Neal Broten, the last member of the United States’ 1980 “Miracle On Ice” team still playing in the NHL, was waived by the New Jersey Devils.
The move came 24 hours after Lou Lamoriello, the Devils’ general manager, met with Broten and told the center to make his own deal in the next day or he was going to waived to make room for younger players.
Broten, who will turn 37 next month, will have to wait 48 hours to see whether he is claimed. If not, he will be assigned to a minor-league team, with the Devils still responsible for paying his $950,200 salary.
The move could mark the end of Broten’s 17-year NHL career. He has 281 goals and 623 assists while playing with only two organizations, Minnesota-Dallas and New Jersey.
