UCI’s Newland Gets 600th Victory

Ted Newland, in his 31st season as UC Irvine water polo coach, got his 600th victory Sunday as the Anteaters beat host UC San Diego, 14-6, in a nonconference game.

Ryan Bailey had six goals in the victory that improved Newland’s record to 600-240-5.

Newland’s teams have won three NCAA titles and reached the championship game six other times.

Newland, who was inducted into the U.S. Water Polo Hall of Fame last year, last week was asked about getting 600 victories and said: “It doesn’t mean much to me. It just says something about longevity is all.”
