The Orange County Department of Education has announced that four elementary school teachers in the Saddleback Valley Unified district will receive awards for outstanding contributions to education.
Fifth- and sixth-grade teachers Carolyn Daly, Marji Jacobs, Katie Kelly and Beth Lee are being recognized for the “village” instructional program they developed at Cordillera Elementary School in Mission Viejo during the summer of 1991.
The program involves team teaching, with 120 students moving from homeroom to four different rooms for instruction throughout the day.
Teachers integrate the curriculum by using literature in language arts that coincides with social studies, science and math topics. The teachers said this approach to learning taps into the expertise of each teacher while improving the educational environment for the students.
The county Board of Education will honor the four teachers on Thursday during its board meeting.
