Weather Expected to Cool Off Slowly

The San Fernando Valley will be cooling off this week as the area recovers from a surprise heat wave over the weekend. But the return to seasonal weather will come at a slow pace.
“It’s a stubborn air pattern staying over us, preventing the sea breezes from coming in,” said Bruce Rockwell, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Oxnard.
The large high-pressure system, centered over Nevada and Utah, has brought unseasonal heat to Southern California--with highs in the 90s--while diverting colder weather into other parts of the country, Rockwell said.
A high-pressure system is not unusual, even for this time of year, and can develop over the region once a month, Rockwell said. But this time, the winds were unusually mild.
“The air is stagnant,” Rockwell said. “It doesn’t seem to cool off at night.”
The high-pressure system will start breaking up today and temperatures should be a few degrees cooler.
High temperatures today are expected to be 87 in Woodland Hills, 84 in Northridge and 85 in Burbank and Van Nuys.
