His team slumping and attendance declining, Bernie Bickerstaff resigned as coach of the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday, turning over the club to assistant Dick Motta.
Bickerstaff will remain president of the team and reclaimed the title of general manager.
Motta, 65, the longtime NBA coach who last season was with the Dallas Mavericks, led the Nuggets to a 117-108 victory over Phoenix.
Bickerstaff’s resignation came three days after his team scored a franchise-low 65 points in a 40-point loss to Portland. He had a 59-68 record in parts of three seasons.
