MALMO, Sweden — Stefan Edberg got what he wanted in his last Davis Cup final.
The 30-year-old Swede, who plays the last two matches of his career this weekend, drew the first match today against France’s Cedric Pioline.
Edberg, a six-time Grand Slam champion in singles, has always preferred a fixed starting time in Davis Cup play.
“It’s more difficult if you have to wait [for the first match to end],” he said. “You never know how long a match will last.”
Thomas Enqvist, playing his first Davis Cup final for Sweden, takes on Arnaud Boetsch in the second singles in the best-of-five match series.
Edberg’s career will end on Sunday when he is scheduled to play Boetsch in the last of the two reverse singles.
