Mode’s Memory Slips

While appreciative of the attention one of my favorite bands receives (“Still in Fashion After 15 Years,” Feb. 1), two of its members are showing a bit of hypocrisy and selective memory.

Martin Gore and Andy Fletcher of Depeche Mode claim to be “carrying the flag for electronic music” and “playing a style of music out of fashion.” They seem to forget that during the heyday of grunge, Depeche Mode’s last album was loaded with guitars (a first for the band) and they were featured prominently in their videos as well.

It is refreshing to see the band at work and getting back to its electronic roots. However, they should thank groups like Underworld, Leftfield and especially 808 State for holding the electronic torch while Depeche Mode members worked through their problems.

Finally, a note to your writer: The term “techno” died in 1992, along with the demise of Mars-FM.
