Violent Crime, Theft Drop 14% in Culver City

Violent crime and theft dropped 14% last year in Culver City, the second consecutive year of record crime reduction in the city. Since 1980, Culver City has seen those crimes drop 58%.
The Culver City Police Department attributed the drop to the high level of community involvement in public safety issues and the strong relationship between residents and police officers.
“The morale of the department is really high,” said Lt. Ellis Smith, crime prevention specialist. “The police officers enjoy doing a good job and in Culver City, the people respond to it well and they tell the officers.”
Ellis said longtime Neighborhood Watch programs and the newer volunteer patrols, who ride bicycles and carry cellular phones, have helped prevent crime. Culver City’s pride in its small-town atmosphere has also contributed to increasing safety, he said.
