Winners and Losers: Three years after the Northridge earthquake, some good news. Housing repairs are being done much quicker here than in Northern California. Apartments lead, with 79% restored. About 70% of single-family homes are now rebuilt. . . . The picture, above, is bleaker for condo owners: barely a third are fixed.
Double KOs: Burbank took it on the chin twice this week. Federal aviation officials rejected the city’s plea to revoke an $8.6-million airport grant, then approved the use of an additional $24.2 million--all to purchase land for a new terminal. . . . There was no comment Friday out of City Hall.
Multiple Offers: The story on the Quezada quintuplets touched many, including parents at the private Fairfield School in Van Nuys. Directors voted to subsidize a portion of the youngsters’ tuition in preschool through eighth grade. . .”We talked about donating diapers or something,” said director Howard S. Spike. “But then we said, why not something that goes on forever, like a good education.”
The Week Ahead: After a 10-year hiatus, women’s professional golf returns to Glendale. The action runs Friday through Sunday at the Oakmont Country Club. A minority of the private club’s members left the tournament in 1987. Several complained that the crowds interfered with their schedules and privacy. . . . The full membership endorsed the revival, along with a three-year contract.
