Seven Errors Help Tustin Topple Capistrano Valley

Tustin took advantage of seven Capistrano Valley errors and upset the top-ranked Cougars, 6-2, Thursday in the semifinals of the Newport Elks Tournament. The Tillers (3-0) play sixth-ranked Esperanza, a 7-3 winner over third-ranked Mater Dei, for the championship.
With the score tied, 2-2, in the bottom of the fourth inning, Tustin took the lead, scoring three runs. Tiller pitcher Ryan France held on for his first victory of the season, limiting Capistrano Valley (2-1) to five hits. Teammate Elmer Roldan was two for four with a double.
In the other semifinal:
Esperanza 7, Mater Dei 3--Brett Kay, Pat Manning and Rob Perry hit consecutive home runs in the first inning for Mater Dei (2-1), but Esperanza (3-0), led by Brandon Pack, recovered from a 3-0 run deficit to advance to the championship game. Pack went two for four with a home run and a double.
In the Costa Mesa tournament:
Bolsa Grande 4, Century 1--Isaac Gonzales went three for three with a double to advance Bolsa Grande (4-1) to the championship game against Mission Viejo on Saturday. Jack Kusuda (1-1) pitched five innings to pick up the victory and Gus DeLeon recorded his first save.
Mission Viejo 8, Laguna Beach 3--Jason Marian hit two home runs, with three RBIs to help advance Mission Viejo (3-0) to Saturday’s championship.
In the Loara Tournament:
Katella 6, Servite 3--Mike Martinez had two hits, including a home run and two runs scored, to help advance Katella to the finals at 7 p.m. Saturday at Glover Stadium. Keawe Kuehnel (3-0) went the distance giving up six hits. At the plate he added two hits.
El Dorado 9, La Quinta 3 (10)--Brandon Downing hit a bases-loaded triple in the top of the 10th to break a 3-3 tie and put El Dorado (4-0) into the finals against Katella. Richard Mejia added four hits, a double and an RBI.
El Toro 9, Ocean View 8--El Toro’s Rob Covault scored the game-winning run on Darron Ohwiler’s two-out single in the top of the seventh inning. Covault, who had reached on a single, was three for three with three RBIs for El Toro (3-1).
In the Glendora Tournament:
Sonora 16, Azusa 3--Jeremy Weinberg, Clint Patton and Ryan Vorell hit back-to-back-to-back home runs in the first inning of a semifinal victory for Sonora (3-0). Weinberg had three hits and four RBIs for the Raiders (3-0).
Sonora plays El Monte in the championship at 7 p.m. Saturday.
In nonleague boys’ track:
Tustin 82, Huntington Beach 50--Scott Moser, the defending state discus champion, threw the second-farthest distance in county history at 196-3 to lead Tustin (1-0). The top throw in the county is held by by Brian Blutrich of Capistrano Valley at 210-8 in 1985. Moser’s previous best was 193-11 set last Thursday.
Dominique DeGrammont, the fourth-place finisher in the 110 hurdles at state the last two years, won in 13.7 for Tustin (1-0), which is ranked second in the county behind El Toro. DeGrammont also won the 300 hurdles in 39.6.
In the Cypress girls’ softball tournament:
Cerritos Gahr 4, Westminster 3--Porsha Draper had a two-out triple in the bottom of the seventh to knock in two runs and scored on a throwing error to home for the winning run as Gahr (4-0) advances to play Kennedy in the championship game.
In the Laguna Hills softball tournament:
Pacifica 7, Foothill 0--Amanda Freed pitched a one-hit shutout as Pacifica defeated third-ranked Foothill (3-1) to win the Laguna Hills tournament. Freed had 14 strikeouts.
Tiaria Auelula had two hits and three RBIs for second-ranked Pacifica. Auelula had a two-run home run in the second inning.
Her sister, Toria, was two for four with a triple for the Tigers.
