THE ROAD TO THE FINAL
HARVARD-WESTLAKE
Harvard-Westlake 47, San Diego University 40--Jason Collins scored five of his 15 points in the fourth quarter to bail out the defending state champion Wolverines in the Southern California Regional Division III final at Cal State Fullerton. The Warriors rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit to within 41-40 with three minutes to go before Collins took control.
Harvard-Westlake 66, Tehachapi 35--Ryan Smiley made six of seven shots and scored 14 of his 16 points in the third quarter, when the Wolverines scored the first 22 points, of the regional semifinal. Tehachapi slowed Harvard-Westlake with a zone defense and the Wolverines held only a 28-21 halftime lead..
Harvard-Westlake 75, San Diego St. Augustine 46--Jarron Collins, a 6-foot-9 senior, had 23 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots. Jason Collins, a 6-10 center, added 20 points, 11 rebound and four blocks in a regional first-round game. St. Augustine was within 32-26 at halftime.
Harvard-Westlake 84, Morningside 64--The Wolverines coasted to their third consecutive Southern Section Division III-A championship when senior guard Rico Cabrera scored 16 of his 22 points in the first half as the Monarchs double-teamed the Collins twins.
Harvard-Westlake 81, Duarte 51--Jason Collins had 28 points, 15 rebounds, five assists and five steals and Jarron Collins had 14 points, 15 rebounds and five assists and the Wolverines beat Duarte in the Division III-A semifinals for the third consecutive season. Ryan Smiley added 17 points and Victor Munoz had 10 assists.
In two earlier playoff games, Harvard-Westlake routed Compton Centennial, 93-46, in a Division III-A quarterfinal game, and the Wolverines trounced Northview, 83-31, in the first round.
Fast fact: Senior Jason Collins is 13 rebounds shy of the state career rebounding record of 1,496 set by Wendell Kallenberger of Garden Grove Rancho Alamitos from 1963-66. The Wolverines are ranked No. 1 in the state by Cal-Hi Sports and fifth nationally by USA Today.
HILLSDALE
Hillsdale, 61, Arcata 42--The Knights overcame a 15-7 deficit in the first quarter by slowing the pace on offense and applying full-court pressure on defense. Point guard Travis Kertel controlled the tempo and Hillsdale dominated the second half to win the Northern California Regional championship.
Hillsdale 59, Sacramento Foothill 51--A small, scrappy Foothill team put a scare into Hillsdale, which needed good free-throw shooting and a mistake-free fourth quarter to win the regional semifinal game.
Hillsdale 76, Susanville Lassen 49--Lassen was overmatched by the savvy Knights, who had four players score in double figures and never trailed in the regional quarterfinal game.
Hillsdale 63, Los Gatos 58--A seesaw Central Coast Section final ended with Hillsdale sixth man Ben Dondero making two free throws in the last 30 seconds. Los Gatos, with a pair of 6-5 inside players, was one of the tallest opponents the Knights played all season.
Hillsdale 61, Santa Cruz 38--Hillsdale forward Arjuna Manning-Laisne, the San Mateo County player of the year, got into foul trouble, causing the Knights to slow the pace and sit on an early lead. Hillsdale held the ball for 3 1/2 minutes during one third-quarter possession.
Fast fact: Nick Vanos, a 7-foot center, is the only Hillsdale High player to make the NBA, playing for the Phoenix Suns in the 1980s. Vanos, who graduated from Hillsdale in 1981 and played at nearby Santa Clara University, was killed in an airplane crash in 1988. Also, Dick Vermeil, St. Louis Rams coach, was the football coach at Hillsdale in the early 1960s.
