Ex-Speaker Brown Testifies in Conroy Trial
- Share via
Former Democratic Assembly Speaker Willie Brown testified Monday that embattled former Assemblyman Mickey Conroy, on trial in Sacramento for sexual harassment, erred in skirting an attempt by house leadership to punish his chief of staff for violating legislative rules.
Brown, now the mayor of San Francisco, said it was inappropriate for Conroy, an Orange County Republican, to use campaign funds to pay Pete Conaty after the top aide was docked a week’s salary for violating the Assembly’s sexual harassment policy.
The former speaker also undercut arguments that the former staff member who filed the charges was dismissed for budgetary reasons.
