Hootenanny ‘n’ Canny

In a sequel to one of last year’s most enjoyable and conceptually savvy daylong rock festivals, Hootenanny ’97 will play again at Oak Canyon Ranch in Santiago Canyon.

It brings together some of rock’s key originators along with younger traditionalists and some rambunctious modern-rockers who have one foot in punk and another in roots-rock tradition.

Headlining the July 5 concert are a couple of rock’s founding cornerstones, Chuck Berry and the guitar-and-drums duo of Scotty Moore and D.J. Fontana, key players from Elvis Presley’s landmark ‘50s band. Another major figure is Steve Earle, the Texas-bred country-rocker who merges a deep-roots awareness with a mastery of Bob Dylan-inspired songwriting artistry.

The show’s neo-traditionalist faction, grounded in rockabilly, country or blues, includes Lee Rocker, Robert Gordon, the Paladins, Top Jimmy, James Intveld, Jimmy Camp, Russell Scott & His Red Hots, Hot Rod Lincoln, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and the Rhythm Lords.

Bands that come to their roots by way of a punk background are Supersuckers, Los Infernos, Tenderloin, Joe Wood and Dean Delray.
