Head Start Program in Watts to Hold ‘Family Fun Day’

More than 2,000 people are expected to converge today on a parking lot near Watts for the annual “Family Fun Day” hosted by the Kedren Head Start/State Preschool and Family Service Center.

The event, which starts at 8 a.m. at 710 E. 111th Place, will feature free food and rides, including a carousel and a train.

Head Start, a nationwide educational program for children 3 to 5, teaches children basic learning skills such as the alphabet and the identification of geometric shapes.

The agency has 26 facilities in Los Angeles and teaches classes in English, Spanish, Cambodian, Japanese and Armenian.

Kedren’s Family Service Center, which does not receive public funds, offers adult continuing education, literacy and computer courses, career development, tutoring, after-school athletics, and college preparatory classes.

“We survive on faith and donations,” said Kitty Davis-Walker, Kedren’s resource manager.

“We’ll have a ton of fun,” said Cornell Ward, Kedren’s volunteer resource coordinator.
