State Funds for School Computers

Your coverage of Gov. Pete Wilson’s state budget (May 15) overlooked a major win for California’s high school students. Wilson has doubled funding for the Digital High School initiative, which aims to supply every California high school classroom with computer technology over the next four years. With first-year funding raised to $100 million, at least 200 high schools will be able to install comprehensive, state-of-the-art hardware, software, networking and communications technology systems within the next 24 months.
Extensive studies have been conducted on the need for classroom technology. We know that by the year 2000, 60% of all jobs in the U.S. will require computer skills. The time is ripe to move forward with a pragmatic, feasible plan of action. The California Business Roundtable solidly supports this initiative. We strongly urge California lawmakers to support the Digital High School initiative as embodied in Assembly bills AB 1011, AB 1012 and AB 1013. Every student deserves access to computer training--a basic skill in today’s high-tech world.
