Former City Councilman John Kanel will have a street named after him in honor of his longtime service to the community.
The City Council voted to rename the 5500 block of Mildred Circle as Kanel Circle.
Kanel, who is 67 and lives on the street, served on the council from January 1964 to March 1976 and from November 1982 to November 1990. He also was mayor three times: in 1970-71, 1984-85 and 1986-87.
“It’s an honor, of course,” said Kanel, who is semi-retired. “It’s nice the council did it.”
Not everyone agreed with the proposed name change. Council members Mary Ann Jones and Tim Keenan opposed it, saying they feared it might be disruptive.
But Councilman Walter K. Bowman, who was part of the three-member majority who approved the proposal, said Kanel deserves to be honored by the city.
“He was ‘Mr. Cypress’ for a long time,” he said.
The new Kanel Circle street sign will cost the city $100 to purchase and is expected to be in place within three weeks, city officials said.
