Stallion Sir Tristram Injured and Destroyed

HAMILTON, New Zealand — Sir Tristram, the greatest thoroughbred stallion in the southern hemisphere, was humanely destroyed Wednesday after suffering a broken shoulder.

Sir Tristram, who sired 42 winners of Grade 1 races--more than any other stallion in the world--was found injured in his paddock late Wednesday at Cambridge Stud, apparently having suffered the injury while galloping.

Owner Patrick Hogan took veterinary advice that the injury could not be repaired.

The son of Sir Ivor was born in Ireland in 1971 and began his stud career in New Zealand in 1976 after Hogan paid $110,000 for him. His service fee was as much as $150,000.
