FRESHWATER
17. CASTAIC LAKE--Lower lake picking up, upper lake on fish arm good with night crawlers and plastics for smaller bass. Bluegill and crappie picking up on lower lake. Actor Greg Kinnear and producer Alan Mruvka, Los Angeles, both limited on preferred plastics Monday with guide Gary Harrison from Castaic. Also guided by Harrison: Mark Farmer, La Mirada, 11-0, 15-5 bass using Castaic lure. Lance Winn, Chatsworth, 8-9 bass on upper lake fish arm on night crawlers. Rick Kelly, Santa Paula, 10-5 bass on plastic worms. Phil Ritenouv, Santa Paula, 6-0 on night crawler.
18. LAKE PIRU--Trout good trolling from marina to dam and Santa Felicia Cove. Needlefish and Kastmasters up to 16 feet producing limits. On Monday, 2,000 trout were planted. Bass showing at the north end and Piable Cove average weight up to 2-6 pounds. Inflated night crawlers best. Crappie showing at northeast end, biting crappie jigs and mealworms.
19. PYRAMID LAKE--Largemouth and smallmouth bass excellent. Best at Tin Cup and around the island using night crawlers. Few stripers but very small. Catfish fair and some crappie. Catfish best in channels using anchovies.
20. LAKE CACHUMA--Trout picked up last few days. Best around west end near dam. Trolling 25-40 feet producing many over a pound. Jack Green, Santa Barbara, limit of trout trolling Rapalas at west end. Some bass and catfish and occasional red-ear near the island.
21. LAKE CASITAS--Catfish excellent, averaging 5-6 pounds on mackerel in 5-10 feet of water. Bass best in early morning. Crawdads and night crawlers best. Some trout bite trolling in 60 feet of water using needlefish lures--averaging 1-9 pounds.
22. CORONA LAKE--Catfish and crappie bite excellent. Hubert Green, Rialto, 36-2 catfish on mackerel in the trees. Crappie hitting light-colored mini-jigs in the trees and other structure areas at the south end of the lake. Some trout, best near the dam. Brent Rinnert, Corona, 6-0 trout on Power Bait at the dam.
23. SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--Trout fair. Sandy Beach most active using Power Bait and night crawlers. Catfish good at Bubble Hole and near the boat dock. Mackerel catching most. Robert Lewis, Los Angeles, 30-9 catfish at the boat dock using meal worms.
24. IRVINE LAKE--Stocked this week with 5,000 pounds of Mt. Lassen rainbows. Lots of limits fishing in Sierra Cove and along the west shore, trolling by the buoy line and off the red clay cliffs. Fred Steiner, Villa Park, 16-pound limit using inflated night crawler in Sierra Cove. Larger rainbows have moved deeper and anglers landing in 3- to 6-pound class while trolling lead core line along the west bank and off Rocky Point. Combination of night crawlers behind flasher rigs, deep running Rapalas and frog-colored needlefish accounted for bulk of trophy rainbows.
25. LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Catfish good, 7,000 pounds of catfish in 1- to 3-pound class stocked in last two weeks. The flats after dark is area producing most limits. Deep holes midday also productive. Jan James, San Clemente, 12-2 catfish at the dam using shrimp soaked in “Hog Wild” Dip Bait. Shrimp, mackerel and Power Bait nuggets best. Bass fair, 1- to 3-pound size in morning with crank baits and poppers.
27. LAKE PERRIS--Bass and bluegill is fair, best off island and the beach. Crickets and night crawlers producing most limits. David Lawhead, Moreno Valley, 5-4 largemouth bass on a banjo minnow from the water slide.
28. SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--Lake Sutherland and Lake Hodges best for bass. Hodges also best for catfish. Mark Rodgers, Covina, 9-9 largemouth bass at Hodges near the dam arm using a gig. Also at Hodges, Mike Long, Poway, 13-10 largemouth bass on a crawdad. Bass action at El Capitan is good and at San Vicente also. Linc Tripp, El Cajon, 10-7, largemouth bass at El Capitan’s Zorro Bay on plastics. North End also good at El Capitan.
29. LAKE CUYAMACA--Crappie bite is excellent, best with Trout Teasers. Bass bite good, trout poor. Some trout at Pumphouse Cove and Lone Pine Tree. Bass good along the shoreline using plastic crawdads or lizards. This week, 2,000 pounds of trout added.
31. BISHOP--South Lake best with numerous limits throughout canyon. White tube jigs with meal worms best. A 5-pound rainbow was landed by Adam Caliri of Chino at Lake Sabrina with a blue fox. Also at Sabrina, Roy Gates of Montebello caught 6- and 3-pound rainbows on yellow Power Bait. The road is finally open at North Lake and bite is picking up. In the valley, crickets and worms are best but the action is slow at Owens River. Night crawlers and salmon eggs best at Pleasant Valley Reservoir.
32. MAMMOTH LAKES AREA--Crowley Lake is best, particularly for perch. Trolling Rapalas landing fish in 5- and 7-pound range, but must troll deep. Trout fair. Convict Lake is good from South shore with night crawlers. Trolling also good. Water high at Rock Creek and Mammoth Creek. Twin Lakes still slow, as are Mamie and Mary lakes.
33. JUNE LAKE LOOP--June Lake good in the mornings, trolling with silver needlefish and rainbow Rapalas. Lots of limits. Gull Lake is excellent, troll surface to five colors and deep with anything gold. At Silver Lake, limits of rainbow being taken trolling.
34. BRIDGEPORT--Bridgeport Lake fair to good depending on day. Best bet boat fishing with some trolling. Alpers rainbows planted this week. Twin Lakes fair at best. Also planted Alpers and some catchables. Shore fishing probably best bet. Virginia Lakes now iced out, good activity on planted rainbows, wild brook trout and browns. Streams all in extreme runoff, difficult to fish.

2. MORRO BAY (Virg’s Landing)--21 anglers (1 boat): 3 lingcod, 38 red rock cod, 279 rockfish. (Bob’s Sportfishing)--9 anglers (1 boat): 1 lingcod, 35 red rock cod, 1 red snapper, 89 rockfish.
3. AVILA BAY (Avila Beach)--20 anglers (2 boats): 300 rock cod, 5 halibut, 22 lingcod.
4. SANTA BARBARA (Sea Landing)--48 anglers (2 boats): 168 calico bass, 19 sand bass, 1 sculpin, 132 barracuda, 22 rockfish, 1 sheephead, 5 butter bass. (Hornet’s Landing)--6 anglers (1 boat): 38 calico bass, 6 sand bass, 18 barracuda, 10 mackerel.
5. VENTURA--8 anglers (1 boat): 1 calico bass, 3 barracuda, 71 rockfish, 14 sculpin, 43 red snapper.
6. OXNARD (Cisco’s)--31 anglers (2 boats): 4 barracuda, 120 calico bass, 3 halibut, 45 sand bass, 5 sculpin, 1 cabezon. (Gold Coast)--11 anglers (1 boat): 72 calico bass, 2 halibut, 14 rockfish, 19 sand bass, 2 white seabass.
8. MARINA DEL REY--48 anglers (4 boats): 1 halibut, 34 barracuda, 157 calico bass, 56 sand bass, 1 sheephead. (In-Seine Sportfishing)--29 anglers (3 boats): 6 barracuda, 44 sand bass, 45 calico bass, 100 mackerel.
9. REDONDO BEACH--109 anglers (4 boats): 4 yellowtail, 127 calico bass, 11 sand bass, 368 barracuda, 6 halibut, 10 white seabass, 7 sculpin, 4 rockfish.
10. SAN PEDRO (L.A. Harbor Sportfishing)--116 anglers (4 boats): 15 yellowtail, 195 calico bass, 26 sand bass, 33 bonito, 3 perch, 14 sculpin, 144 barracuda, 1 sheephead, 1 whitefish.
