LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Several long gallops have set up Silver Charm for a five-furlong workout today at Churchill Downs. It will be his final drill for Saturday’s Belmont Stakes.
The Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner is trying to become the 12th Triple Crown champion and the first since Affirmed in 1978.
“The batteries are charged,” trainer Bob Baffert said Monday. “We’re ready.”
Silver Charm will be flown to New York on Wednesday morning.
A field of eight is expected for the 129th Belmont. Besides Silver Charm, other probable entries are Free House, third in the Derby and second in the Preakness and a colt who beat Silver Charm twice at Santa Anita this year; Crypto Star, who was fifth in the Derby; Irish Silence; and two two-horse entries--Wild Rush and Touch Gold, and Mr. Energizer and Hoxie.
