28-Year Veteran to Head Street Maintenance Bureau

Filling one of at least nine vacancies in the bureaucracy’s executive tier, Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan on Tuesday elevated a lifetime employee of the Bureau of Street Maintenance to head the department.

The mayor said Gregory L. Scott, who started at the bureau in 1969 as an engineering aide, was selected after a national recruitment effort. Scott has been an assistant director of the bureau, overseeing 78% of its activities, since 1994.
