Heroism Honored: The Church on the Way in Van Nuys and Stephen S. Wise Temple of Bel-Air today present the first Varian Fry Award, which honors those who risked their lives to save others. The recipients are Dr. Marcel Verzeano, who helped 4,000 Jews escape France in World War II, and the nation of Sweden, which resisted German calls to deport Jews. “This award,” said church secretary Helen Melahouris, “helps bring the Jewish and Christian community together.”
