MISSING THE POINTE
I tire of reading how dangerous a choreographer Mehmet Sander is (“If It Bruises, It’s Working,” by Jennifer Fisher, June 22). Many of his dances are safely performed on mats. His movement vocabulary, similar to gymnastics, circus acrobatics, break dance or capoeira, requires specialized training but is, in fact, less dangerous than ballet pointe.
What is interesting about Sander’s work is not its physical riskiness but his juxtaposition of neoclassical line and form with an athletic aesthetic that revels in showing the exertion required to successfully complete physically demanding tasks.
