N.Y. Governor Proposes Transit-Fare Reductions

NEW YORK — Gov. George Pataki, supported by commuter advocates and environmentalists who have lobbied hard for subway and bus fare cuts, proposed a plan Monday to make public transportation cheaper.
Pataki, a Republican, told a news conference that riders would be able to buy monthly, weekly and one-day passes for the first time. The proposal requires MTA board approval.
A monthly pass would cost $63, meaning that riders who make one round-trip a day in a 30-day month would pay $1.05, 45 cents less than the present rate. The proposed weekly pass would cost $17 and the one-day pass would provide unlimited rides for $4. People older than 65 can get half-price passes.
