Three Days After Football Loss, Hart Falls to Peninsula in Tournament

Some advice for Hart High schedule makers: Keep Peninsula off your itinerary.

Three days after Peninsula knocked Hart’s football team out of the Southern Section Division II football playoffs, the Panthers bounced the Indians into the consolation bracket of the Beverly Hills boys’ basketball tournament with a 75-66 first-round victory Monday night.

Hart (3-2) fell behind by 15 points in the first quarter but battled back to tie the score, 66-66, with three minutes to play, before the rally fizzled.

J.T. Stott made five of 11 three-point shots and finished with 29 points, eight rebounds and four steals for Hart.

Peninsula, which won the Loyola tournament last week, improved to 4-0.

Palisades 62, Ventura 38--Jeff Staniland scored 15 points for the Cougars (0-1) in a first-round game.

Steven McMaryion scored 26 points for Palisades (5-0).

In other boys’ basketball games:

Bell-Jeff 76, Workman 53--Ruben Douglas, who has signed with Arizona, had 39 points and 14 rebounds, and Mike West added 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Guards (1-0) in a first-round game of the Arroyo tournament.

El Camino Real 80, Van Nuys 54--Kamal Hoke and Ryan Moss each scored 16 points, and Justin Sadd added 15 for the Conquistadores (1-3) in a nonconference game at El Camino Real.

South Gate 56, Montclair Prep 50--Ronald Johnson scored 26 points for South Gate (3-3) in an El Segundo tournament first-round game.

Adrian Garibay added 17 points for the Rams and held Montclair Prep standout Rocky Steryo to 11 points

Jed Hall had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Mounties (1-1), who are ranked fourth in the region by The Times.

South Gate made 21 of 28 free throws; Montclair Prep made eight of 13.

Lancaster Bethel Christian 89, Desert Christian 68--Mark Carl and Cory Royce came off the bench to score 21 and 17 points, respectively, for the Eagles (1-1) in a first-round game of the Bethel Christian tournament.

Royce had 18 rebounds and Carl had seven steals. The two players are normally starters, but they missed a practice to attend a play and were not allowed to start against Desert Christian.

Jamar Culver had 14 points and eight rebounds, Brandon Eggerth had 12 points and Mike Oakley added 10 points and nine rebounds for Bethel Christian.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

North Hollywood 72, Westlake 34--Markia Derby had 20 points and six assists, and Tashean Thomas added 17 points and nine steals for the Huskies (5-0) in an intersectional game at North Hollywood.

Chaminade 58, Canoga Park 34--Julie Cichon had 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Eagles (4-1) in an intersectional game at Canoga Park.

Sherman Oaks CES 51, Mid-College 14--Erica Ephraim had 19 points and 11 steals, Kenya Richie contributed 12 points and 15 rebounds and Jackie Cannon added 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Knights (3-0) in a Magnet League opener at Sherman Oaks CES.

Flintridge Sacred Heart 61, Mayfield 37--Danielle Dal Ponte scored 18 points for the Tologs (1-1) in a nonleague game at Mayfield.

Channel Island 60, Malibu 25--Chene Tuimoloau scored 18 points for the Raiders (1-0) in a nonleague game at Malibu.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Honors: Former Chatsworth High standout Jerome Joseph of The Master’s College was selected most valuable player at the 50th annual Lee Fulmer tournament last weekend at Redlands University.

Joseph scored a game-high 31 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the tournament final. Master’s defeated Redlands, 85-70.

Four other players besides Joseph scored in double figures for The Master’s, including all-tournament team selection Joclin Julmist, who had 10 points and eight rebounds.
