Suspected Car Thief Escapes After Crash

A car thief crashed into a light pole but managed to escape from a police search early Monday.
The 1987 Toyota Camry was reported stolen from a driveway in the 1000 block of Colina Vista about 3:50 a.m. Officer Tom Higgins spotted it a few minutes later turning north onto Victoria Avenue from Foothill Road.
The driver ran the Toyota over a mailbox and into the light pole, but got out and ran before Higgins reached the scene. Police set up a perimeter and called in a police dog as well as a police helicopter, but were unable to capture the thief.
