Pope John Paul II on Tuesday named Loyola High School president Father Gordon Dunlop Bennett to the post of Auxiliary Bishop of Baltimore, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles said.
Bennet, 51, was in Baltimore and could not be reached for comment, but in a press release he thanked family, friends and his former students for their support.
The Denver native entered the Society of Jesus, the Jesuit order, in 1964 and was ordained in 1975.
He was principal at Loyola, a boys high school, from 1980 to 1988 and returned in 1996 to assume the post of president.
“As this Los Angeles priest-son travels to Baltimore . . . he takes with him the esteem, respect, gratitude and prayers of all the people of our archdiocese,” said Los Angeles Cardinal Roger M. Mahony.
