The El Monte City Council on Tuesday officially launched a search for a new city administrator to replace Gregory Korduner.
On Monday, the council appointed the city’s community development director to fill the post on an interim basis.
Harold Johanson will see his pay increased to the $111,000-a-year city administrator’s salary when he takes over as interim administrator in January.
Korduner, the city’s top employee for 13 years, will leave his position Jan. 23 to take a similar post in Fontana. City officials said the selection of a new administrator is expected to take six months.
Johanson is credited by city officials with helping to lure two major new stores, Kmart and Home Depot, to the city.
