Robert J. MacNeil, a 28-year-old tenor from La Palma, won the $2,600 second-place award Saturday at the Metropolitan Opera National Council western regional auditions at USC. Only the co-winners, baritone Malcolm Mackenzie of Los Angeles and tenor James Crowley of Arizona, advance to the national finals in March in New York.
