Royal Ejection Could Create a Hole in Goal

Now the Royal High water polo team can start its real season, though it may have to do it without All-Southern Section goalie Garrett Herzer, who was ejected in a 15-6 victory over Agoura in a Marmonte League finale Friday at Rancho-Simi Community Pool.
The Highlanders (22-3, 8-0 in league play) have won at least a share of the last 17 league titles, but their focus will be on the Division IV playoffs starting next Friday.
“When the playoffs start, that’s our season,” said Royal senior David Radka, who scored five goals against Agoura (19-6, 6-2). “We’re going to pick up our practices now. We kind of eased up before this.”
Herzer, who had nine saves, was ejected with 5:32 to play. After allowing a penalty-shot goal by Elliott Hirsch, he turned around and punched the ball back into the net in frustration.
The referee immediately called unsportsmanlike conduct on Herzer, who had been warned twice for rough play.
Jeremy Rode scored on the ensuing penalty shot to pull Agoura to within 10-6. Royal countered with a 5-0 run to put the game away.
Southern Section officials will rule Monday if Herzer can play in Royal’s playoff opener.
