Katella’s Johnson Sets School Record

Francis Johnson rushed for 282 yards and two touchdowns to lead Katella to a 40-7 victory over host Century in an Empire League game Friday night at Tustin High.

Johnson, a junior, set the school’s single-game record, breaking the mark of 275 yards set by Chris Higby in 1967.

But Johnson wasn’t the only star for the Knights (5-4, 2-2). Quarterback Stevie Gomez threw four touchdown passes in the game, including three to Arthur Tiscareno.

“We still made some mistakes, but we also made some big blocks,” Katella Coach Dominik Unger said. “Johnson has very good speed and hopefully he’ll get faster next year.”

Katella took a 6-0 lead with 8 minutes 12 seconds left in the first quarter when Gomez hit Tiscareno over the middle with a 30-yard scoring pass. The extra-point try was wide left.

Johnson scored his first touchdown with 4:22 left in the first half, breaking through the right side of the line and going 68 yards. Gomez hit Johnson with the conversion pass and a 14-0 lead.
