L.A. Baptist Rises, Maranatha Falls

Outside hitter Gloria Erickson sat out the match because of illness, but others picked up the slack for L.A. Baptist in a 16-14, 15-13, 15-13 victory over Maranatha in an Alpha League girls’ volleyball match Tuesday at L.A. Baptist.

The Knights (8-2, 3-0 in league play) rallied from 5-1 deficits in the first two games and knocked Maranatha (7-1, 2-1) from a share of the league lead.

Kristen Jensen recorded 14 of her career-high 31 kills in the first game and added 15 digs.

La Canada d. South Pasadena, 15-2, 15-2, 15-6--Emily Dalbeck had 13 kills and Kelly Gaudino added six for the Spartans (8-1, 3-0) in a Rio Hondo League match at South Pasadena.

Royal d. Simi Valley, 15-2, 15-2, 16-14--Jenny Myszcowski served eight aces for the Highlanders (8-1, 6-1) in a Marmonte League match at Simi Valley.

Sherisa Livingston had nine kills for Royal.

Highland d. Quartz Hill, 15-12, 15-5, 15-4--Jennifer Smith had 10 kills and seven digs, and Jennifer Crosier had 22 assists for the Bulldogs (9-0, 3-0) in a Golden League match at Quartz Hill.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Cleveland 4, Taft 3--The No. 1 doubles team of Debbie Yim and Leanne Chan defeated Taft’s Linda Tran and Marta Gajewski, 8-4, to boost the Cavaliers (3-3, 1-2) in a Northwest Valley Conference match at Cleveland.

Agoura 12, Westlake 6--Brooke Borisoff shut out three singles opponents and Alyson Tyson lost just four games in three singles sets and the Chargers (7-4, 5-2) beat the Warriors for the first time in 11 years in a Marmonte League match at Agoura.

Simi Valley 14, Royal 4--Margo O’Donnell and Andrea Espinosa lost just one game in three sets at No. 2 doubles, sparking the Pioneers (11-1, 6-1) in a Marmonte League match at Simi Valley.

Mindy Gondrez swept at No. 1 singles for Simi Valley, which will attempt to avenge its only loss in a league match Thursday against Camarillo (11-1, 7-0).

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Santa Barbara 14, Buena 6--The Bulldogs (8-9, 2-1) had a 4-3 lead but the Dons took control with two goals in the final 30 seconds of the first half at Carpinteria City Pool.

Ian Prichard had three goals for Buena.
