Many Nations Circumventing Ban on CFCs, Environmental Group Says

From Times staff and wire reports

Thousands of tons of ozone-depleting CFCs are being imported into developed countries yearly in circumvention of bans on the once widely used chemicals, a British-American environmental group called Environmental Investigation Agency Ltd. charged Wednesday. The group said that 6,000 to 10,000 tons are being imported in Europe each year, primarily from Russia, India and China.

The organization said it established a dummy company and contacted companies selling refrigerants in Europe to establish its case about the extent of CFC importing. “Within days, the dummy company had offers for large quantities of CFCs from around Europe and the Far East,” the organization said. “Suppliers openly admitted falsifying documents to allow European companies to get past import controls.”
