Odor Forces City Council to Evacuate, Cancel Meeting

The City Council halted its regular meeting Tuesday night after Capt. Richard Odenthal of the West Hollywood sheriff’s station smelled a chlorine odor, and notified Mayor Sal Guarriello.
“Is everyone smelling the chlorine?” asked Guarriello, who ordered the West Hollywood Park auditorium to be evacuated.
About 30 people stood in the parking lot for half an hour while the leak was checked out, said public information officer Tisha Sutherland.
“At 10:30, we took a vote in the parking lot to adjourn the meeting,” she said.
The odor was apparently caused by cleaning personnel mixing ammonia with Chlorox, said Guarriello. The vapors from the mix got into an air-conditioning duct, he said.
