Promise Keepers

Re “NOW Targets Men’s Movement,” Aug. 30: So, amid all the problems and dangers facing women today, Patricia Ireland, president of the National Organization for Women, calls a press conference to announce that NOW will be spending its time and resources in a “no surrender” campaign. What’s this campaign against? Rape? Nope. Spousal abuse? Nope. Deadbeat dads? Nope. NOW has decided that it’s more important to spend its time and money attacking Promise Keepers, a movement aimed at ensuring that men behave like kind, caring and responsible husbands and fathers. Do the folks at NOW really think that responsible husbands are more dangerous than abusive ones?
Perhaps Ireland feels that attacking a well-known movement is the easiest way to get publicity and financial donations. Unfortunately, that’s the least cynical explanation for her actions.
