* Georgia Tech (0-0) at No. 11 Notre Dame (0-0), Channel 4, 11:30 a.m.: Cheer, cheer for new Notre Dame as Lou Holtz successor Bob Davie debuts in newly refurbished and expanded Notre Dame Stadium-- from 59,075 capacity to 80,225. Georgia Tech is 4-25-1 against Notre Dame and has long been fodder for great Irish moments, most notably serving as backdrop for Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger’s 27 seconds of fame in the 1975 game on which a movie plot was hatched.

The Line: Notre Dame by 19 1/2

* California (0-0) at Houston (0-1), Fox Sports West, 12:30 p.m.: Things might not be peachy for new Cal Coach Tom Holmoe, who succeeds Steve Mariucci, but at least Holmoe didn’t lose Jerry Rice for the season. Cal actually has a good receiver in Bobby Shaw but is breaking in a new quarterback. Houston lost to No. 15 Alabama last week, 42-17.

The Line: Houston by 2

* Rutgers (0-1) at No. 12 Texas (0-0), Fox Sports West, 4 p.m.: A tasty appetizer before the Longhorns host UCLA next week. How, exactly, does Rutgers get cable TV games in consecutive weeks? Last week, the Scarlet Knights were routed by Virginia Tech on ESPN. Fourteen starters from last year’s 8-4 Texas team, including quarterback James Brown and running back Ricky Williams.

The Line: Texas by 38

* Cal State Northridge (1-0) at Hawaii (1-0), Fox Sports West 2, 10 p.m.: Two juggernauts square off for national supremacy? Well, not exactly, although Northridge’s Aaron Flowers is worth a second look after throwing six touchdown passes last week in a 63-23 romp over Boise State. Meanwhile, in Hawaii, the head coach and governor are squabbling, which is never good for the coach.

* East Carolina (0-0) at West Virginia (1-0), ESPN, 9:30 a.m.: East Carolina, a former independent power, has signed on with Conference USA and draws the tough first-game assignment at Morgantown, W. Va. The Pirates have the nation’s leading returning rusher in junior Scott Harley, who gained 1,745 yards last year. West Virginia is just catching its breath after surviving a scare last week from cross-state rival Marshall.

The Line: West Virginia by 7

* Indiana (0-0) at No. 7 North Carolina (0-0), ESPN2, 9 a.m.: The Tar Heels begin what some think could be a national title run with a tricky opener against the Hoosiers, a Big Ten mystery under new 35-year-old Coach Cam Cameron.

The Line: North Carolina by 29 1/2

* Southern Mississippi (0-1) at Illinois (0-0), ESPN2, 4 p.m.: The Golden Eagles beat Georgia last year and gave national champion Florida a scare last week before losing, 21-6. Illinois is coming off a 2-9 season but should be better offensively under first-year Coach Ron Turner, brother of Washington Redskin Coach Norv Turner.
