Canyon Pulls Off Another Upset, 28-26

PALMDALE — Matt Gregory rushed for 255 yards and one touchdown in 42 carries to lead Canyon High over fifth-ranked Highland, 28-26, in a nonleague game Friday night at Highland.
Drew Welch scored on a three-yard run with one minute 26 seconds remaining to give the Cowboys a 28-19 lead and help them pull off their second upset in as many games.
Welch, who rushed for 91 yards in 15 carries, also scored on a five-yard run that gave the Cowboys a 21-19 lead.
The Bulldogs (1-1) pulled within 28-26 on an eight-yard touchdown pass from Camy Smith to Brian Floyd with 49 seconds left. Highland attempted an onside kick, but Darryl Perry recovered for Canyon and the Cowboys ran out the clock.
Canyon quarterback Luke Petticord completed only two of eight passes but the first was a 25-yard touchdown to Josh Borgese that tied the score, 7-7, in the first quarter.
Highland kicker Derek Brown made a school-record 51-yard field goal in the second quarter and added a 31-yard kick in the third quarter. Brown attempted a 58-yard field goal in the fourth quarter that fell a few yards short.
Dan Bruton’s 13-yard touchdown run gave Highland a 19-15 lead with 3:01 remaining in the third quarter.
Highland scored first on an 11-yard run by Smith, who completed 13 of 26 passes for 197 yards and one touchdown.
Bulldog wide receiver Michael Deleon had four receptions for 51 yards.
