Heritage Christian 10, Downey Calvary Chapel 7--Jacob Somerville rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown as Heritage Christian opened its first full season of 11-man football with a victory at Cerritos Valley Christian High.
The Patriots (1-0) had played six- and eight-man football for the past 37 seasons, though last season they had some 11-man exhibition games.
Heritage Christian was forced to punt on its first possession, but got the ball back two plays later when Daniel Vanzile fumbled at the Calvary Chapel 47-yard line.
The Patriots scored first with 1:40 left in the first quarter when Somerville ran in from six yards. He also carried the ball for the two-point conversion.
The Grizzlies (0-2) scored two minutes into the second quarter when quarterback Jaime Banuelos connected on an eight-yard pass to John May.
