A Thousand Oaks bicyclist riding without a helmet was seriously injured Wednesday when he smashed into the passenger side of a passing pickup truck, authorities said.
Omar Hersa, 24, suffered a broken shoulder, hand and leg and deep cuts on his face and scalp in the 9:14 a.m. crash on Erbes Road in a residential neighborhood, Deputy Rick Harwood said.
Hersa was in serious condition before undergoing surgery at Los Robles Regional Medical Center, said hospital spokesman Kris Carraway. The pickup truck driver, Rocky Lundy, 30, of Simi Valley, was not injured.
Hersa was riding his bicycle on a private driveway when he decided to ride onto Erbes Road, Harwood said. At the time, the street had minimal traffic, Harwood said. Neither excessive speed nor drugs and alcohol were believed to have been involved.
