Highway Signs
My wife and I just had a driving vacation through seven western states. On the interstate highways, all of the states except California have nice large green mileposts every mile. The offramp numbers correspond to the mileposts. For example Exit 232 is located at mile 232. The Auto Club maps show the exit numbers. This system is great, because you can tell exactly how far it is to your exit and locate mountains and lakes by the relative position on the maps.
Then you get to California, where in its infinite wisdom Caltrans has chosen not to adopt this wonderful method. Everyone I know loves this system. We led the nation in right turns on red, but we are sure trailing other states in this respect.
